Do you or your organisation have funding challenges? South Lakeland Area Support want to help. Have your say regarding future funding for the voluntary sector.

We want to ensure that we are providing you with the support and services that you need. Our sector survey last year revealed that funding/money is the biggest challenge the VCFSE (Voluntary, Community, Faith and Social Enterprise) sector in Cumbria faces.

Our follow-up survey aims to dig deeper into this area, with questions seeking information we can use to provide additional support.

Planned June Closure of promenade and Silverdale Road

Information About the Forthcoming Closure of Arnside Promenade/Silverdale Road Mid to Late June

**UPDATE 17/7/25** Westmorland & Furness Council have informed us that, all being well they should be able to finish up the last section of resurfacing and then the relining during the Friday night shift (18th July 2025), but, if not, then this may roll over to Monday night. We will keep you posted as to any further delays.

Information has been received regarding the upcoming resurfacing works scheduled to take place on the Promenade and Silverdale Road. Advanced warning signs are already out around the village advising of a commencement date for the works of 19th June for 17 nights, however, due to poor weather, the resurfacing programme is now running slightly behind. The new commencement date for the works is Monday, 23rd June, however it is possible that this date will move further back if poor weather continues to cause delays with the programme. We will be informed of any further changes.

The works are estimated to take up to 18 shifts to complete (weather depending) and the extent of the resurfacing bed is highlighted in red on the attached plan.

In order to undertake the works safely and in compliance with current health & safety legislation, a full road closure will be in effect between 6:30pm and midnight each shift. Works will not take place over the weekend.

Access for emergency services and residents/businesses will be allowed when possible and if safe to do so. In order to keep disruption to the public as minimal as possible the works will be phased. Currently the contractor plans to commence works at the Ashleigh Court end of the site and close off a shorter section, complete this then head west, working in several shorter sections along the promenade and then up Silverdale Road; however, this may change but again, we will keep you updated.

A signed diversion route will be in place (via Briery Bank and Black Dyke Road) and letters to local businesses and residents fronting onto the closure should be received next week. The letters will contain contact details for the resurfacing contractor and the traffic management contractor, and residents are free to speak to any of the marshals on-site whilst the works are in progress to discuss any specific access arrangements etc.

The above dates are indicative, and are subject to change due to overrun of the programme/poor weather conditions etc, but we will be kept updated.

Update On Recent Changes to the 552 Bus Service

Following complaints about recent changes to the bus service to include Silverdale and Carnforth, Westmorland and Furness Council are investigating the issue.

Data from recent journeys show that the arrival times are erratic with the service sometimes running on or close to time, and on other days significantly late – although there is no apparent pattern. On some days the bus appears to leave Carnforth on time, but loses time on the way to Arnside, possibly delayed by roadworks or other obstructions outside the control of the operator.

There are concerns about the time being allowed between Carnforth and Arnside, so if there is a re-occurrence of the problem, please contact the Council’s Scheduled Bus Services team on 01228 226433 so the issue can be brought to the company’s attention.

The best place to find the current timetable, or any timetable for the area, the Council’s own website as that gets updated whenever services change, including warnings of forthcoming changes: westmorlandandfurness.gov.uk/buses/service/552 (for other services just add the service number in place of 552). Road Closure Silverdale Road - 15th June

Urgent Road Closure – Silverdale Road, Arnside: 15th June 2025

An urgent road closure has been put in place to allow CHB Surfacing LTD to carry out urgent utility repair works. This notice will be in force for a period not exceeding 5 days from 15th June 2025. It is expected that the Works will take 1 day.

Please see below details of the extents of the restriction and any alternative route which may be in place, the relevant legal notice can be viewed here and a location plan clearly showing these extents can be found on one.network via link here.

Location: Silverdale Road, Arnside, from its junction with Back Lane, extending in a south easterly direction to its junction with Ashmeadow Road.

Alternative Route: A suitable alternative route will be signed and made available via the unrestricted sections of Silverdale Road, Briery Bank, Black Dyke Road and Station Road (B5282). A way for pedestrians and dismounted cyclists will be maintained at all times.

N.B Passage for Emergency Vehicles will not be maintained for the duration of this restriction.

Apply Now! – Thrive with Arts, Culture and Heritage Grant Funds

People involved in the world-renowned arts, culture, heritage, festivals and events scene of Westmorland and Furness are being urged to apply for two major grant funds worth a total of just over £260,000.

Applicants have until Monday, 2nd June 2025 to apply to the £175,276 ‘Thrive with Arts, Culture and Heritage Fund’ and the £85,000 ‘Festivals and Events Fund’.

The two schemes have been relaunched by Westmorland and Furness Council after they ran so successfully last year.

Haverflatts Lane Road Closure

Temporary Road Closure: Haverflatts Lane, Milnthorpe 22nd – 24th May

A temporary road closure has been put in place to allow Fibrus to carry out utility works which are expected to commence 22nd May 2025 and anticipated to take 3 days to complete.

Please see below details of the extents of the restriction(s) and any alternative route(s) which may be in place, the relevant legal notice can be viewed here  and a location plan clearly showing these extents can be found here.

Location: Haverflatts Lane, Milnthorpe from its junction with the C5071, extending in a south westerly direction for approx. 490m.

Alternative Route: A suitable alternative route will be signed and made available via the C5071 and Kirkgate Lane.  A way for pedestrians and dismounted cyclists will be maintained at all times.

N.B Passage for Emergency Vehicles will be maintained where required for the duration of this restriction.

Waste & Recycling Community Consultation

Help to Shape the Future of your Waste and Recycling Collections

Residents are being invited to help shape the future of waste and recycling collections in Westmorland and Furness.

A ‘Community Conversation’ has been launched by Westmorland and Furness Council to gather people’s thoughts on current services in their area – what they like, what they would like to change and what they’d like to see in the future. The feedback received will help inform the council’s emerging options for creating consistent waste and recycling services across the whole of Westmorland and Furness.

These options will be considered early next year and a vision for the revised service will be completed by mid-2025. This will be subject to further engagement and agreement and residents can expect to see the first changes being implemented from late 2025, with the majority of service revisions in place by the end of 2027.

Councillor Giles Archibald, Westmorland and Furness Council’s Cabinet Member for Climate, Biodiversity and Environmental Services, said: “Our aim is to reduce waste, increase recycling, and provide services for our residents that are consistent across the whole of the Westmorland and Furness area. We also want to make it easier and more convenient for people to recycle and minimise their waste. We want to involve our communities in helping us to plan what future services will look like, and have launched our Community Conversation on waste and recycling collections. This includes a survey that residents can complete to tell us what they think about current services in their area, how they use those services and what they’d like to see in the future.”

“We will also be holding some in-person events, where people can come along to learn more about what we are looking to achieve, ask questions and take part in workshops. We will be holding these events in each of the former district areas and there will also be an on-line event for anyone unable to attend the in-person sessions. The feedback from these events and the online survey will provide us with valuable information that will help us to develop our vision for consistent waste and recycling services, so every household is receiving the same level of service wherever they are in Westmorland and Furness. We want to see services that are better performing, more efficient and that make it easier for people to recycle more and waste less.’’

Currently, Westmorland and Furness Council delivers 7.5 million collections annually to 115,000 households in one of the largest and most rural unitary local authority areas in the country, covering a geographic area of 3,750 square kilometres.

Councillor Archibald continued: “It’s vitally important to us that we reflect the views of our communities when we are planning the future of such important services that affect every household in Westmorland and Furness. I would encourage as many people as possible to complete our survey or attend one of the in-person events to share your views.’’

To be part of the Community Conversation on the future of waste and recycling services in Westmorland and Furness, you can share your thoughts on current services in your area by completing our Waste and Recycling Community Conversation Survey.

The survey will close on 20th December 2024.

Paper copies of the survey will be available in the receptions of the council’s main public buildings at Barrow Town Hall, Kendal Town Hall and Voreda House, Penrith, as well as council libraries.

In-person events where you can learn more about the waste and recycling harmonisation programme and the council’s ambitions, share your thoughts and take part in workshops on recycling and waste minimisation, will take place on the following dates:

  • Wednesday, 27 November 2024, The Forum, Barrow, 6pm – 7.30pm

Footpath Closure Map

Westmorland and Furness Council (Footpath No. 502009 in the Parish Of Arnside (Temporary Prohibition of Pedestrians) Order 2024

Notice is hereby given that, to enable Lancaster City Council to carry out resurfacing of the footpath (“the Works”), Westmorland and Furness Council intends to make an Order the effect of which is to prohibit pedestrians from proceeding along Footpath No. 502009 in the Parish of Arnside between grid references: 344450, 477688 and 344481, 477581.

A suitable alternative route for pedestrians will be available via the adjacent field.

The Order will come into operation on 1 October 2024 as and when the appropriate traffic signs are displayed and may continue in force for a period of up to six months or until the completion of the works, whichever is sooner.

A65 Closure between Crooklands Roundabout and Nook

The A65 between Crooklands roundabout and Nook will be fully closed to traffic overnight from Monday, 23rd September 2024 (Monday – Friday 8:00pm to 5:00am), for approximately 4 weeks.

There have been temporary traffic lights at the site for several months. The lights were installed in response to an incident involving a HGV leaving the carriageway, and overturning into the adjacent land. The accident caused significant damage to the verge, leaving the carriageway edge unsupported with a steep drop off into the adjacent land.

A contractor has now been appointed to undertake the works on behalf of the council. The scheme involves the construction of a new pre-cast concrete retaining wall, approximately 35 metres in length.

Regrettably, the closure of the A65 will cause unavoidable disruption. The construction of the wall will require heavy plant and machinery, which will take up both lanes of the usable carriageway. It is hoped that disruption will be minimised as much as possible by undertaking the works at night and reinstating the traffic lights at the end of each shift, allowing the road to reopen to traffic the following day.

The contractor has been instructed to place advance warning signs on site, advising road users of the upcoming night closures from 23rd September. Stagecoach and KT Coaches have confirmed the closure from 8pm will not impact upon their services.
