Hollins Lane Road Closure May 12th

Road Closure: Hollins Lane, Arnside – May 12th for 4 Days

A temporary road closure has been put in place to allow Fibrus Networks Limited to carry out utility works which are expected to commence 12th May 2025 and anticipated to take 4 days to complete.

Please see below details of the extents of the restriction and any alternative route which may be in place, the relevant legal notice can be viewed here and a location plan clearly showing these extents can be found on one.network via link https://one.network/?tm=142192586

Location: Hollins Lane, Arnside, from its junction with Briery Bank, extending in a southerly direction to its junction with Swinnate Road.

Alternative Route: A suitable alternative route will be signed and made available via Swinnate Road, Black Dyke Road and Briery Bank.. A way for pedestrians and dismounted cyclists will be maintained at all times.

N.B Passage for Emergency Vehicles will be maintained where required for the duration of this restriction.

A P Lee Independant Vets in Carnforth, established in 1984 by Alison Lee, will continue as an independant veterinary practice in the hands of Practice Director, Joseph Elliott BVMedSci BVM BVS GPCert(SAS) MRCVS following Alison’s retirement last year.

Graduating from the University of Nottingham, Joe has worked in a variety of small animal hospitals, and has completed a certificate in small animal surgery. He enjoys all aspects of general practice and has a passion for surgery, competent in performing a wide variety of orthopaedic and soft tissue surgeries.

With an excellent, enthusiastic and caring support team, the practice offers a full range of veterinary services with excellent facilities for consultations, digital x-ray, ultrasound scanning, operating theatre, in-house laboratory facility, dental equipment, ECG, and blood pressure monitoring. Outreach Opportunities for Primary Schools – Part of the ‘Step Up to Dallam’ programme

Dallam School are showcasing some outreach sessions for primary schools in May and June and are encouraging parents, carers and those who work in the local primary school to get involved and help their school sign-up. They are a series of hands-on creative sessions with the first booking deadline is coming up soon – on Friday, 9th May 2025.

The sessions are:

Friday, 6th June 2025 – ‘Joseph Elliott’s Storytelling Adventures’ 12.30 – 3pm

Where children can join author and CBeebies star Joseph Elliott for a fun afternoon of storytelling. He’ll reveal the secrets behind his characters and how he brings stories to life—with a signed book up for grabs. Closing date for bookings: Friday, 9th May.

Thursday, 12th June 2025: ‘Feel The Beat’ Explore African Music and Mixed Media. 9am – 3pm

Step into art and music with two high-energy creative sessions. Feel the beat with our African drumming session, where you’ll learn how the Djembe drum is used in West African music. Have a go at playing it yourself.

After the music, get creative with printmaking in our mixed media workshop – there’ll be a masterpiece to take home too! Closing Date for Bookings: Thursday, 15th May 2025

Wednesday, 17th June 2025: ‘Lab Legends’ – Get Hands-On With Science. 12.30 – 3pm

Get ready to dive into the world of science. an energetic session of real lab experiments in chemistry and biology, using proper science equipment like Bunsen burners and microscopes. Who knows what amazing discoveries you’ll make in the lab? Closing Date for Bookings: 20th May 2025

Interested in Playing Competitive Table Tennis?

Burton Table Tennis Club currently has 4 teams in the Kendal & District Table Tennis League – 2 teams in Division 1 (Burton A & B), and 2 teams in Division 2 (Burton C & D). There are 3 players in a team and home matches are played on Wednesday evenings, from 7-9pm, in the Burton Memorial Hall.

On Thursday evenings, Junior Coaching runs from 5.15pm to 6.00pm and an Adult Social Session from 6pm to 7pm. Currently seven juniors attend the junior sessions and eight people attend the adult social.

CancerCare 'Lights to Remember'

Local Cancer and Bereavement Charity Holds Unique Remembrance Event For The Public

A local charity who helps people affected by cancer and bereavement is inviting people to pay tribute to lost loved ones at a special remembrance event.

CancerCare North Lancashire and South Cumbria are hosting ‘Lights to Remember’ on Friday 25th April 2025 from 7pm at their Slynedales Centre in Lancaster. The grounds around the historic building, where many clients receive support after a cancer diagnosis or after losing a loved one, will be lit up with personalised candles bearing a name and a message.

The evening will have opportunities for reflection as well as contemplative live music. A team of CancerCare therapists will also be in attendance on the night should attendees feel the need to talk to someone.

‘Lights to Remember’ is kindly sponsored by Birchall Blackburn Law for the second time. Last year’s event was titled ‘Lights on the Lawn’ and it was rebranded for 2025 to encourage people who might not be able to attend the evening to use the charity’s online dedication wall. Here you can leave a photograph and a lasting message to a lost loved one, and the CancerCare team can place your light for you on the night.

‘Lights to Remember’ is for everyone who has experienced loss, not just those who have used CancerCare’s services. The event is free to attend, though there is an option to donate to CancerCare so they can continue to support children and adults affected by cancer or bereavement.

Eleanor Sweeney from Caton attended ‘Lights on the Lawn’ last year. Eleanor’s late husband Peter was diagnosed with bowel cancer in 2019. Peter was supported by CancerCare’s Lancaster Centre via one-to-one counselling prior to 2020, continuing his sessions over the phone during the Coronavirus pandemic. Peter sadly died in May 2023.

New Playground Design

The New Arnside Playground Installation to Commence Week beginning 31st March

Confirmation has been received that the contractors will be on site week commencing 31st March to start the installation, which is scheduled to take 2-3 weeks allowing for any unforeseen groundworks and weather. The site will be fenced off shortly before 31st March.

Working hours on the site will be 8am to 6pm to get the work done as quickly as possible. Deliveries to the site will be made between 11am amd 1pm where possible to avoid school traffic.

People and properties directly affected will be contacted by either the Playground Group or the Parish Clerk, and the school has also been informed to pass details on to parents.

Don’t forget that the playground will be closed from 24th March to allow the current play equipment to be removed in readiness for work to start.

Carnforth 1940's Weekend

Step Back In Time With Carnforth’s First Ever 1940s Weekend

Carnforth’s first ever 1940s weekend will be held on June 28th and June 29th and will be celebrating 80 years of the film “Brief Encounter” which was filmed at Carnforth station. The free two day event is for the whole family.

You can expect live music, vintage cars and tractors, military vehicles, model railways, a funfair, best dressed competitions, Mr and Mrs Churchill impersonators, jive classes, a vintage catwalk and vintage stalls, a miniature children’s train ride, a 40s radio broadcast, and food and drink.

The event is being run in conjunction with Carnforth Heritage Visitor Centre.

New Playground Design

Date For Work To Start On The New Playground!

Although still awaiting final confirmation, all the hard work and effort of the fundraising group, together with the sponsors, donors and everyone involved in making this happen, will finally come to fruition next month.

Installation of the new playground is due to take place at the end of March, with removal of the existing playground taking place during the week before. While this will unfortunately mean that the playground will be closed from 24th March – and therefore over the Easter holidays, the other suggested installation date was not until September which would mean no new playground for the Summer holidays either.

Check out the fantastic new layout below, it will be well worth waiting for! An accessible playground for the future and for all children.

Age Without Limits, Centre for Ageing Better – Campaign and Micro-grants

Age Without Limits, Centre for Ageing Better’s campaign to challenge ageism, is running its second annual Age Without Limits Day on Wednesday 11 June 2025, with the theme “Celebrate Ageing. Challenge Ageism“. It is a day for us all to come together and take action to end ageism – as individuals, with friends and family, in our communities and in our workplaces.

Micro-grants:
As last year, micro-grants are available to community groups and local voluntary sector organisations, big or small, based within Age-friendly Communities.
Grants of up to £500 are available, with an additional £150 to cover anything needed to make the event or activity more accessible. All events and activities will need to respond to the theme “Celebrate Ageing. Challenge Ageism”.

For inspiration of events and activities applicants could host, please read this blog and case studies from the March 2024 Age Without Limits Day.
